Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed carrying out a high-stakes raid at the home of dancehall musician Shatta Wale, real name Charles Nii Armah Mensah, as part of an international criminal investigation involving the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice.
The operation, conducted on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, was executed by EOCO’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) and focused on seizing a luxury 2019 Lamborghini Urus located at the musician’s residence in Trasacco Valley Phase 1, Accra.
According to EOCO’s official statement, the flashy SUV is suspected to be one of several assets linked to Nana Kwabena Amuah, a convicted fraudster currently serving an 86-month sentence in the United States. Amuah is said to owe over $4.7 million in restitution, and the Lamborghini was identified as a recoverable asset.
EOCO explained that their officers were indeed armed during the exercise, a standard measure for asset recovery operations involving high-value property. The agency also stressed that the raid was executed without any confrontation or resistance.
The statement appears to address backlash from Shatta Wale, who took to social media shortly after the event to criticize the use of firearms during the operation, warning it could affect the political fortunes of EOCO’s leadership.
Despite the initial tension, the agency revealed that Shatta Wale expressed concern about the potential impact of the seizure on his reputation and pleaded for discretion. He was reportedly allowed to voluntarily hand over the vehicle to EOCO, which now has it in its custody.
Looking ahead, EOCO disclosed that a formal request for Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) is expected from the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department to facilitate the vehicle’s return to the United States as part of Amuah’s restitution process.
The development places Shatta Wale in the spotlight of a transnational financial crime recovery effort, even though he is not directly accused of wrongdoing at this time.
