As Ghana celebrated its 69th Independence Day on Friday, 6th March 2026, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo shared a reflection on the meaning of the nation’s freedom.
Joining dignitaries at the national anniversary parade held at the forecourt of the Presidency in Accra, the former leader used social media to remind Ghanaians of the enduring responsibilities that accompany independence.
In a reflective message shared to mark the occasion, the former President emphasised that the country’s freedom is not a static achievement but a continuous process that demands the commitment of every generation.
Reflecting on the foundations of the Ghanaian state, the former President highlighted the intellectual and institutional strength required to sustain a republic.
His message underscored that the nation’s progress is rooted in the “abiding truth” that ideas and philosophy are the architects of stable politics.
“Our independence, for us and for future generations, represents the abiding truth that ideas matter; that philosophy shapes politics; that institutions outlive individuals; and that as it is said, eternal vigilance remains the price of liberty.”
The 69th Independence Day celebration, held under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” served as a major moment of national unity.
Former President Akufo-Addo was among the high-profile attendees, standing alongside President John Dramani Mahama, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
During the event, President Mahama paid tribute to Ghana’s founding leader, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to the ideals of liberation and continental unity that have defined Ghana’s history since 1957.
The former President’s message of “eternal vigilance” serves as a resonant reminder to the Ghanaian public that the preservation of democracy requires constant dedication and the active participation of all citizens in safeguarding the nation’s hard-won liberties.
