Political activist and anti-corruption campaigner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticised members of the NPP who have recently raised concerns about prepaid electricity units.

“The people who couldn’t fix fuel prices are now saying that if it were them, ECG credits wouldn’t finish early,” Barker-Vormawor tweeted, taking aim at what he described as the party’s sudden outcry.

He added, “Even ECG cables kraa you steal am. Let us think!”

His remarks come amid widespread public complaints that prepaid electricity units are depleting faster than expected following the recent tariff adjustment under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO).

Many Ghanaians have been sharing screenshots showing meters running down unusually quickly, raising questions about the efficiency of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the fairness of the new tariffs.

In response, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has convened an emergency meeting with ECG.

In a letter dated February 25, 2026, the Commission noted allegations that prepaid units were being exhausted unusually fast.

“Given the regulatory, technical, and consumer protection implications, and the potential impact on public confidence in the metering and vending systems, the Commission is convening an emergency meeting,” the letter stated.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 12:00 noon at the PURC GNAT Office in Accra.

Officials from ECG and regulators are expected to address public concerns and clarify issues surrounding the new tariff adjustments.
