Former professional footballer Kiki Musampa has been arrested in the Netherlands over allegations of tax fraud amounting to more than €100,000. The 48-year-old, who once had a brief stint with Manchester City, was taken into custody earlier this week during a police operation that also targeted his residence.
Investigators reportedly confiscated financial records along with several luxury watches during the raid. His long-time accountant, a 65-year-old man, was also detained in connection with the case. Authorities allege that Musampa declared himself an overseas tax resident while still earning income within the Netherlands, resulting in unpaid taxes.
Though he was released the following day, Musampa continues to face scrutiny as Dutch authorities pursue the matter. Reports also suggest that the former winger has struggled with financial and tax issues in the past, including the repossession of a property in Amsterdam.
Musampa’s arrest comes at a time when he is serving as assistant coach for Jong Ajax, the reserve side of his boyhood club. Ajax confirmed awareness of the arrest but refrained from commenting further.
Before turning to coaching, Musampa enjoyed a playing career that spanned across Europe and Asia. He came through Ajax’s famed academy, where he was part of the squad that lifted the 1995 Champions League, although he did not feature in the final. His career included spells in France, Spain, England, Turkey, and South Korea, with notable league title wins in both the Netherlands and France.
Premier League fans may remember him most for his short loan at Manchester City in 2005, where he scored four goals across all competitions. Musampa retired in 2009 after leaving Willem II and has since focused on youth coaching, including roles with the Dutch under-21 team, before returning to Ajax in 2023 to join their coaching staff.
