A car rental transaction in Accra has spiraled into a criminal investigation involving forged identities, a missing vehicle, and a traditional leader.

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded Nana Abeka Anderson, an IT technician, and Nana Kofi Baah I, the Gyasihene of Gomoa Fete, for allegedly conspiring to steal a Kia Forte valued at GH¢200,000. The vehicle was rented from a service provider in New Bortianor under suspicious circumstances.

According to prosecutors, Anderson contacted the rental company on March 10, 2025, requesting the car be delivered to his residence in Haatso. He paid for a two-day rental and provided identification documents bearing the name Essel Kofi Elvis. However, checks later revealed the Ghana Card and driver’s licence were forged.

When the rental period expired on March 13, the complainant was unable to reach Anderson, whose phone had been switched off. The vehicle’s tracking system had also been disabled.

The matter was reported to police on March 14. Investigators later discovered Anderson had been arrested in a separate case and transferred him to the Accra Regional CID. During interrogation, he admitted to renting the car and handing it over to Nana Baah I at Kakraba.

The traditional leader also confirmed receiving the vehicle and said it was later passed to a third suspect, Yakubu, who remains at large. The two reportedly received GH¢16,000 from Yakubu and split the proceeds.

Both accused are being investigated in connection with other vehicle theft cases and have failed to assist police in recovering the stolen Kia Forte. They face charges of conspiracy, with Anderson also charged with stealing and forgery.
