A 63-year-old trader has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Kwadaso Circuit Court for stealing a tricycle and 114 loaves of bread in Kumasi.

The convict, Adamu Alhassan, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea. The incident occurred in February 2024 when a bread seller, Oduro Zakaria, loaded his unregistered tricycle with bread worth GH¢1,680 to deliver to customers at the Adehyeman lorry station.

After the tricycle developed a fault, Adamu allegedly posed as a station master and offered to help move it to a safer location. The two pushed the vehicle to the Kejetia MTN roundabout, where Zakaria left it in Adamu’s care while he searched for a mechanic.

When Zakaria returned, both the tricycle — valued at GH¢35,000 — and Adamu had vanished. It was later discovered that Adamu had no affiliation with the station.

On August 28, a witness spotted Adamu at the station and alerted Zakaria, leading to his arrest by the Ashanti Regional Anti-Armed Robbery Unit. During interrogation, Adamu admitted to selling the tricycle to a scrap dealer for GH¢700 and giving away the bread to passers-by.
