The family of Samuel Sarpong, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman who perished in the tragic August 6, 2025 helicopter crash, has expressed relief following the release of the official investigative report. The report, presented on November 11, 2025, concluded that the crash resulted from a sudden loss of altitude and lift caused by a downdraft—a natural atmospheric phenomenon.
The investigative committee clarified that the helicopter’s loss of altitude occurred without any change in power or pitch, indicating that environmental conditions over the high terrain near the Adansi Akrofuom District were the primary factor. This explanation directly addressed months of speculation and rumors surrounding the crash.
Family members of Samuel Sarpong have described the findings as a source of comfort and closure. They emphasised that the crash was a tragic act of nature beyond human control and expressed satisfaction that the investigation provided a clear and thorough explanation of the events leading up to the accident.
The committee, chaired by National Security Coordinator DCOP Abdul-Osman Razak, conducted the inquiry with representatives from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB-Ghana). They also received technical and advisory support from the United States Air Force to ensure the investigation adhered to the highest standards.
According to the report, the helicopter was fully airworthy, and the crew had completed their prior flights according to Ghana Air Force regulations. The sudden downdraft encountered just minutes from the destination was identified as the critical factor in the crash, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers and three Ghana Air Force crew members.
The family’s response underscores a broader effort to accept the findings of the investigation, bringing an end to speculation and providing a measure of peace after the devastating loss. The committee’s work is expected to serve as a reference point for aviation safety and operational procedures within the Ghana Air Force.
