A farmer in Kebbi State, Nigeria, made a life-changing discovery after uncovering a newborn baby girl buried alive on his farmland. The emotional rescue unfolded on Friday in the town of Kamba, within the Dandi Local Government Area.
The man, identified as Kabiru Kamba, said he had noticed something unusual on his farmland—a ridge that stood out from the rest. Acting on instinct, he flagged down a few motorcyclists passing by and asked for help. Together, they dug into the strange mound, soon unearthing a piece of cloth buried beneath the soil.
Sensing something was wrong, he contacted local police stationed nearby. Upon arrival, officers continued digging and were stunned to find a crying infant wrapped in a piece of fabric—alive despite having been buried.
Kamba shared his account on Monday when a delegation from Kebbi State’s Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence visited him at his residence in Kamba town. The team, led by Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, a former Permanent Secretary at the State Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, praised the farmer’s quick thinking and compassion.
Following the rescue, the baby was placed in Kamba’s care by the Dandi local government council, pending the outcome of police investigations. The farmer explained that he took the child in purely out of compassion and a sense of responsibility, believing it was the humane thing to do.
The incident has sparked concern across the community, with many hailing the farmer as a hero for saving the infant’s life. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine who buried the baby and why.
