Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama
Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has termed as baseless rumours suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) plans to remove the MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as Majority Leader in Parliament.
He argued that the move does not align with the thinking of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, and warned that pursuing such an agenda could undermine cohesion within the party.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on February 3, 2026, Aliu Mahama stressed that there has been no such indication from Dr Bawumia or the leadership of the NPP.
According to him, the rumours of an impending removal should not be taken seriously, as they do not reflect the position of the party’s leadership or its flagbearer.
“I don’t think at this time Dr Bawumia would allow that to happen because he is somebody who wants unity, and he has not said anything. So, nobody should put any words in the flagbearer’s mouth…it can be coming from the NDC just to knock our heads together,” he said.
Farouk Aliu further suggested that the rumours could be a deliberate attempt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stir up confusion within the NPP.
He added that Dr Bawumia remains focused on bringing all factions of the party together.
He further noted that this commitment to unity was evident in his acceptance speech as he urged his supporters to tone down on post-primaries celebration, as a means to foster reconciliation.
