President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the Finance Minister has allocated GH¢2.1 billion to support the government’s Mahama Care initiative, a flagship health policy aimed at addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
According to the President, the funds will be used primarily to provide financial relief for patients suffering from costly non-communicable conditions, which often place a heavy burden on affected individuals and families.
Speaking at the 23rd anniversary and thanksgiving service of First Sky Construction Company in Accra on Sunday, President Mahama said the high cost of treating such diseases informed the introduction of Mahama Care.
“This year, the minister of finance has allocated GH¢2.1 billion to MahamaCare, which will be mainly for non-communicable diseases, for persons with stroke, for persons with kidney problems and for persons with other cancers.”
“The thing about those diseases is they are so expensive to treat…., and that is why the government has to come in and support,” he said.
The President also expressed appreciation to individuals and organisations that have supported the programme and contributed to philanthropic efforts in Ghana’s health sector.
Mahama Care was launched after President Mahama assumed office in 2025 as a specialised health insurance policy designed to provide free medical treatment for persons with disabilities and patients suffering from non-communicable diseases.
