A fire has gutted one of the heritage trains owned by Ghanaian creative artist and author Ibrahim Mahama at his Red Clay Studio in Tamale, Northern Region.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, during ongoing repair work on the train.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, February 19, Mr. Mahama described the loss as a “tragic misfortune,” explaining that sparks from repair activities ignited the blaze.
“Certainly, I am sure if a lot more care had been taken, this could have been prevented,” he noted.
The affected train was part of a collection of decommissioned colonial-era and post-independence railway stock acquired by Mahama nearly two years ago from the Ghana Railway Company.
Due to extensive rust, it had been scheduled for body repairs last in the maintenance rotation.
Despite the destruction, no injuries were reported. Mr. Mahama expressed gratitude to the Ghana National Fire Service and members of the local community for their swift response and assistance in containing the incident.
He also urged the public to exercise caution during the dry season, warning that similar accidents could be avoided with proper care.
“Our hearts may be broken, but our spirits are as high as ever,” he added, emphasising his commitment to preserving Ghana’s railway heritage.
