Asukawkaw, Oti Region — First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, has been enstooled as Nana Oseadeeyo Odenwa II by the Paramount Chief of the Akroso Asukawkaw Traditional Area, Nana Odam Gyamfi III, in recognition of her philanthropic contributions to healthcare delivery in the community.

The honour was conferred during the commissioning of a fully equipped ultramodern maternity and children’s ward constructed by the Lordina Foundation to serve Asukawkaw and surrounding communities in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

In an emotional address, Nana Odam Gyamfi III expressed profound gratitude to the First Lady for what he described as her swift response to the community’s appeal for improved maternal healthcare services.

“Words are not enough to express my deepest appreciation,” he stated, explaining that expectant mothers previously endured long and often distressing journeys to access life-saving medical care during childbirth.

He noted that the new facility brings relief, dignity and renewed hope to the people, adding that the community now feels remembered and cared for.

“You are indeed the Mother Teresa of our time,” the Paramount Chief declared, commending the First Lady for her compassion and commitment to vulnerable communities.

While celebrating the milestone, Nana Odam Gyamfi III highlighted persistent challenges facing the area’s health infrastructure. He revealed that the existing clinic operates a single four-bed ward accommodating men, women, children and pregnant women together, a situation he described as inadequate and unhealthy.

He appealed for the facility to be upgraded into a polyclinic with additional infrastructure, including an accident and trauma ward. According to him, the town sits along a busy corridor linking southern Ghana to Dambai and the northern regions, making it prone to frequent road accidents.

He further called for the provision of an ambulance and the establishment of a fire station to support emergency response efforts, noting that some accident victims are currently transported on motorbikes due to the lack of proper emergency services.

The newly commissioned maternity and children’s ward features a modern reception and waiting area, consulting rooms, a dedicated maternity ward, children’s ward, delivery suite, sterilisation unit, a fully equipped operating theatre and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

It is fitted with essential life-saving equipment, including electric hospital beds, infant incubators, ultrasound machines, phototherapy units, patient monitors and oxygen support systems. Solar panels have also been installed to provide emergency power and reduce electricity costs.

The project marks another significant intervention by the Lordina Foundation as it continues to expand access to quality maternal and child healthcare services across underserved communities in Ghana.

The Asukawkaw facility adds to similar interventions undertaken solely by the Lordina Foundation in Bole, Nkoranza and Bodom, as well as the renovation of the Hohoe Polyclinic and the Adabraka Polyclinic in Accra, all fully funded by the First Lady, Lordina Mahama.

The initiative also aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s broader agenda of delivering quality, affordable and accessible healthcare to all Ghanaians.
