The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has launched a major initiative to protect Ghanaian fishermen from rising piracy attacks at sea.
In recent weeks, several artisanal fishermen were abducted offshore and had their equipment stolen by pirates. While the government has replaced the lost gear through a presidential directive, concerns about future attacks remain.
Addressing the Government Assurance Committee, Fisheries Minister Emelia Arthur said the ministry is taking decisive steps to safeguard fishermen.
“I would like to take this opportunity to assure our fishermen and the general public that significant efforts are underway to address maritime piracy. As you know, some aspects of this matter touch on national security and cannot be publicly disclosed, but I want to emphasise that a lot is being done to protect our fishermen so they can go to sea and return safely.”
She explained that licensing fishing vessels is a key step. While industrial and semi-industrial fleets have long been licensed, artisanal fleets have not been fully included. The ministry is now beginning the licensing process for artisanal fishermen.
In addition, she noted that the ministry is equipping vessels with transponders to track their locations at sea and installing improved communication systems.
“Currently, smartphone signals are lost beyond certain distances offshore, and communication is often limited to Yam phone networks—or unavailable altogether. The new measures will ensure constant communication and enhance surveillance, she said.
Finally, Minister Arthur noted that insurance and pension schemes are being put in place to further safeguard the welfare of fishermen.
“We remain committed to the safety and welfare of all our fishermen.”
