Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is in Latvia to seek answers following the mysterious death of a Ghanaian student studying at Riga Technical University.
The two-day visit commenced with an engagement with the Foreign Minister of Latvia, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, on February 2, 2026.
He reported that the Latvian Foreign Minister had conveyed firm assurances that her government will fully cooperate with Ghana in the pursuit of truth and justice.
In a statement, Ablakwa said, “As I promised Ghanaians, the main reason for requesting to pay this official visit is the distressing and unclear circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.”
His 6-member delegation is made up of senior directors from the Foreign Ministry, a forensic expert and a pathologist, while two members of the bereaved family are expected to join them today.
“My delegation is expected to continue with our engagements tomorrow with confirmed meetings with the ministries of the Interior, Education and investigators on the case,” he added.
Visa Delay
He further cited visa processing delays as the reason two members of Nana Agyei’s family could not travel with his delegation on Saturday night.
He indicated that their visas were issued on Monday for their scheduled trip last night.
“It is worth clarifying that all family members and experts accompanying me on this delegation are fully funded by the ministry. There has been no case of extortion or the issuance of fake tickets as has been alleged without any evidentiary basis whatsoever.”
