Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that Ghana’s passport office will soon operate around the clock, introducing day, night, and dawn shifts.
This move aligns with the government’s broader 24-hour economy agenda aimed at improving service delivery.
During a visit to the passport headquarters in Accra, the minister stressed that the reforms are designed to ensure applicants receive their passports within a week of applying.
As part of the planned improvements, Ablakwa revealed the introduction of chip-embedded passports to enhance security.
Additionally, there will be integration of passport data with the National Identification Authority’s system to simplify the verification process.
In his commitment to modernising the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ablakwa also disclosed plans to revise passport fees.
The new structure will see reduced costs for standard applications, while premium services will attract higher charges.
Outlining the upcoming changes, he noted: “The Passport Administration will soon run 24 hours a day. In 2025, we are implementing three shifts to drastically reduce passport processing times. With these reforms, Ghanaians can expect to receive their passports within a week of application.”
