The Apostle General of Royalhouse Chapel International, Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, has made an impassioned plea for the release of protesters who were detained during the #StopGalamsey demonstration.
His appeal is directed towards the Inspector General of Police, the government, and other authorities, urging them to take swift action in addressing the situation.
Rev. Ankrah expressed deep concern over the treatment of the arrested protesters, many of whom were advocating against illegal mining and the broader challenges facing the nation.
He stressed that detaining these individuals only exacerbates tensions, potentially fueling greater unrest. He suggested that those arrested should be released on bail and, if warranted, face the court system for any offenses committed, rather than being held in cells, which he believes will only heighten public frustration.
Acknowledging reports of misconduct during the protests, including an incident where a protester allegedly discarded a police vehicle key, Rev. Ankrah emphasized the importance of understanding and restraint.
Despite such actions, he called for forgiveness and leniency.
As a national figure, Rev. Ankrah urged the authorities to show compassion and allow for peaceful, democratic demonstrations.
He emphasized that the path forward should focus on non-violent expressions, with protesters peacefully carrying their messages on placards instead of resorting to actions that might incite further tensions.
“I am pleading with the government, the courts, and the IGP to release these individuals. They should be granted bail and, if necessary, brought before the court if they have done something wrong. Keeping them in cells only worsens the situation, fueling anger and frustration, which could lead to further unrest.”
“Our sons may have made mistakes, but let’s forgive them. Throwing them behind bars won’t resolve the problem. Let’s release them and encourage peaceful, democratic demonstrations. March with your placards let that be the message. We don’t want violence.”
