Legal steps have been initiated in the United States to challenge the custody of former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta following his detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This was made known by a legal team member of Ofori-Atta, Frank Davies, in a Joy Prime interview on January 10, 2026.

According to Davies, Ofori-Atta is currently in ICE custody and that his legal team, working in collaboration with lawyers in the United States, has already moved to contest the detention in court.

“Ken Ofori-Atta has been picked up by ICE. We all know he is in custody. What every diligent lawyer would do is to assure himself or herself of the process’s attendant on the custody,” he said.

He disclosed that the legal challenge has formally been filed and will be heard later in January 2026.

“The lawyers in America have filed a process in court… A process has been filed in court to challenge his custody in ICE detention. That process would be heard later this month,” Davies disclosed.

Explaining the coordinated legal strategy, Davies said the Ghana-based lawyers are working closely with their counterparts in the United States to address the situation.

“What does he expect the lawyers in America to be saying? That is why we are here as his lawyers, because we have a collaboration and a teamwork with American lawyers,” he stated.

Providing an update on the current status of the case, Davies reiterated that the matter is now before the court and awaiting determination.

“The position now is that the lawyers in America have filed a process in court to challenge what ICE have done, and that process will be dealt with very, very soon. So, that is the latest on the matter,” he added.
