Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been installed as a Lay Canon of the St Peter’s Cathedral of the Koforidua Diocese of the Anglican Church.
A Lay Canon is a non-ordained member of the congregation (laity) who is chosen by a bishop of the Anglican Church in respect of his significant support and valuable services rendered to the congregation.
He can also give advice to the bishop on the state of affairs of the country or assist with the day-to-day administration of the Cathedral.
The ceremony was attended by his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, their children, friends; Chairman of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hackman Owusu Agyemang, and the former Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, as well as the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The installation ceremony was officiated by the Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese of the Anglican Church, Rt Rev. Felix Odei Annancy and brought together other senior clergymen and prominent figures within the Anglican Church such as two former Archbishops of the church of the Province of West Africa, Most Rev. Gershon Allotey Okine, Most Rev. Daniel Yinkah Sarfo and the Bishop of the Tema Diocese of the Anglican Church, Rt Rev. Dr George Kotei Neequaye.
Conferment
Making the conferment at the Cathedral last Sunday (March 29, 2026), Rt Rev. Annancy said as an Anglican, former President Akufo-Addo had distinguished himself both in the church and the public for decades.
Aside from that, he said, former President Akufo-Addo had also done well in politics in the manner in which he administered the country.
He said it was a result of that that the Koforidua Diocese decided to bestow such an honour of Lay Canon on former President Akufo-Addo.
He said the church would be relying on him for advice for the growth of the diocese and the congregation.
New chapter
Rt Rev. Annancy told the congregation that the honour marked a new chapter in the former President’s public life, reflecting an enduring intersection of faith leadership and dedicated service.
For his part, former President Akufo-Addo pledged to serve the church with humility and dignity and at the same time uphold the church’s values.
He also affirmed his commitment to the doctrine and discipline of the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua in accordance with the constitution of the church.
