A 32-year-old man, Abdul Munaf Lawal, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison with hard labour for defrauding a victim of $50,000 in Kumasi.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command revealed that the case was first reported on July 27, 2023. Lawal convinced the complainant to hand over the money under the pretext of converting it into Ghana cedis. Instead, he kept the cash and disappeared.

After months on the run, he was arrested in Accra on June 27, 2025, for committing a similar offence and later transferred to Kumasi for investigations.

When he appeared before the Asokwa Circuit Court 1, presided over by His Honour Mr. Fred Obikyere, Lawal initially pleaded not guilty. However, on September 3, 2025, he changed his plea to guilty.

Prosecutors also disclosed that Lawal was a repeat offender who had previously served a 24-month prison term for theft.

The court found him guilty and, on September 10, 2025, sentenced him to 35 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
