The Ga Traditional Council under the leadership of the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for the inclusion of the Ga and Dangme within the national education system.
He made this appeal during a courtesy call by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Monday, January 26, to reinforce the government’s resolve to strengthen the use of local languages in education.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II requested that Ga and Dangme be made compulsory subjects across all basic schools’ curricula within the Greater Accra Region, to ensure the preservation of the linguistic heritage of the capital.
He also called for the inclusion of Ga language in the proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) language development collaboration with Google, alongside Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani.
The Ga Mantse stated that the exclusion of the Ga language from the initiative was unacceptable for a language that is central to the identity of the capital.
He proposed the drafting and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education and the Ga state, outlining a long-term policy direction for the teaching, promotion, and digital development of Ga and Dangme.
The traditional council also expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Ghana Educational Service (GES) to establish a legal and administrative framework that will guide the MoU and ensure accountability, continuity, and measurable progress.
They ended with a commitment to continue the engagement and agreed to open channels of communication to support the successful implementation of these commitments.
