Scene from the Upper East Airport site during the tour
The Board and Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have embarked on a tour of GACL-operated regional airports to gain first-hand insight into their operations and assess ongoing development needs.
The tour was led by the Chairman of the Board, James Agalga, alongside senior management headed by the Managing Director, Yvonne Opare.
It forms part of efforts by the Board to strengthen oversight and ensure the efficient development of Ghana’s aviation infrastructure.
The tour commenced at the Tamale International Airport, where the delegation engaged with airport staff and inspected key operational and technical facilities.
The visit provided an opportunity for management to interact directly with personnel on the ground and evaluate operational challenges and areas for improvement.
From Tamale, the delegation proceeded to Bolgatanga to inspect the 4,362-acre parcel of land earmarked for the construction of an airport in the Upper East Region.
The inspection marked a significant step in advancing plans for the long-anticipated airport project.
GACL to introduce airport development fee for major projects
In Bolgatanga, the GACL team was joined by the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, as well as members of the GCAA technical team.
During engagements with local stakeholders and community representatives, the delegation reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the project.
They emphasised that the proposed airport is in fulfilment of a pledge by H.E. the President to ensure the Upper East Region is connected to Ghana’s domestic aviation network.
According to GACL, plans are currently underway to finalise the necessary technical and regulatory requirements to enable a smooth and successful commencement of construction, underscoring the government’s resolve to improve regional connectivity and promote economic development in northern Ghana.
