The Board and Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have embarked on a strategic tour of selected regional airports to evaluate operational efficiency, identify infrastructure gaps, and align airport development with Ghana’s broader economic and connectivity goals.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen service delivery and support regional economic growth.
The tour, led by GACL Board Chairman James Agalga and Managing Director Yvonne Opare, began at Tamale International Airport.
During the visit, the team engaged frontline staff, inspected operational and technical facilities, and assessed service standards, safety protocols, and capacity constraints.
The exercise highlighted the growing role of regional airports in domestic travel, cargo movement, and economic integration.
The delegation subsequently visited Bolgatanga to inspect the 4,362-acre site earmarked for the proposed Upper East Regional Airport. Officials, including Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga and Ghana Civil Aviation Authority Director-General Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, joined the inspection.
The airport project is intended to improve northern Ghana’s air connectivity and stimulate economic opportunities in the region.
Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the Upper East airport as a major infrastructure investment, consistent with the government’s pledge to promote regional inclusion and balanced national development.
Work is ongoing to complete technical, regulatory, and planning requirements before construction can commence.
GACL emphasised that lessons from the tour would guide investment prioritisation and operational enhancements across its network.
Expanding regional airport infrastructure is expected to boost trade, tourism, agribusiness logistics, and emergency services, while reducing travel times and costs for communities and businesses in underserved areas.
