Galamsey Crackdown: 22 Arrested as Police Seize Mining Equipment in Western Region

In a significant operation to curb illegal mining in Ghana, the Western Central Police Command has arrested 22 individuals suspected of engaging in galamsey (illegal mining) activities in the Western Region.

The suspects were apprehended on April 8, 2025, in Dominase Nkwanta, Adjakaa Manso, and other surrounding areas.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Albert Adu Bonsra, Stephen Kwakye, Richard Atigah, Yaw Menanyi, Al-Mustapha Alidu, Jutu Francis, Hakitu Zibo, Nana Yaw Boakye, Kwesi Evans, Isaac Cobby, Bashiru Ali, Atta Francis, Ayew Sali, Fataw Gariba, Kwame Emmanuel, Kwesi Francis, Abapor Frank, Wasah Moses, Bukari Haruna, Abdulai Lukman, Yeboah Rashid, and Alkainu Hassan.

During the operation, the police retrieved several mining tools from the suspects, including 11 pumping machines, seven shovels, a pick axe, and two chamfan machines.

These items were seized from various illegal mining sites as part of the ongoing efforts to combat the destructive practice of galamsey.

The police have confirmed that all the suspects are in custody and are currently being processed to face the full extent of the law.

Authorities are continuing to focus on dismantling illegal mining operations that contribute to environmental degradation in the country.
