A devastating mining accident has claimed the lives of six people—four men and two women—after an illegal gold pit caved in at Wassa Dunkwa in the Amenfi West Municipality of Ghana’s Western Region.
Eyewitnesses say the victims were underground when the unstable earth suddenly gave way, trapping them beneath. Fellow miners rushed to the scene, frantically digging through the debris in a desperate attempt to reach them. Sadly, by the time they were pulled out, all six had died.
A disturbing video from the site, now circulating widely online, shows the victims’ bodies covered with leaves before being carried to their grieving families. The atmosphere in the community was filled with wails as residents watched the heartbreaking scene unfold.
Illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—continues to haunt many parts of Ghana, with frequent pit collapses claiming lives. Despite years of government crackdowns, the practice persists, fueled by economic hardship and the temptation of quick financial gain.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether any arrests will be made following this latest tragedy, which has once again sparked calls for stricter enforcement and safer mining practices in affected areas.
