The Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, has received a top honour for his outstanding contributions to aviation safety, security and regulatory excellence in Ghana and across Africa.

The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations Africa, Middle East (IFATCA AFM) Region, and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Africa conferred the award on him at a ceremony on Monday, March 23, 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The award recognised Rev. Arthur’s outstanding contributions to aviation safety, security and regulatory advancement within Ghana and across the African aviation landscape.

The citation accompanying the honour read: “In recognition of your exemplary leadership, distinguished service and unwavering commitment to strengthening aviation safety and security, advancing regulatory excellence, enhancing air navigation services and infrastructure, and promoting operational excellence in Ghana’s aviation sector and the wider African aviation community.”

The award was presented to the Director-General at the GCAA headquarters by the President of the local chapter of IFATCA, Charles Opoku Appiah.

Ghana’s aviation image

In his remarks, Rev. Arthur stated that the recognition would motivate him to work even harder to enhance the image of the authority and promote Ghana’s standing within the global aviation ecosystem.

Rev. Arthur dedicated the award to President John Dramani Mahama for the honour bestowed upon him through his appointment as director-general of the authority, for which he said he remained deeply grateful.

He said the award was also dedicated to the board, management and staff of the GCAA for their immense support since his appointment a year ago.

Leadership drives aviation reforms

The recognition underscores Rev. Arthur’s leadership in aligning Ghana’s aviation sector with international best practices, particularly in safety oversight, air navigation service delivery and infrastructure modernisation.

His tenure has contributed to strengthening institutional capacity and fostering regional collaboration within Africa’s aviation ecosystem.

The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations serves as the global voice of air traffic controllers, advancing aviation safety and supporting the sustainable evolution of the industry through professional development, advocacy and international collaboration.
