The Right to Information Commission has imposed administrative penalties totalling GHC 220,000 on four public institutions for failing to comply with their statutory obligations under the Act.
Among the institutions are the Ghana Education Service (GES), WBM Zion Senior High School, National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and Economic and Organised Crime Office.
The GES and WBM Zion Senior High School have been fined GHC 10,000 each, while the NPRA and EOCO will each pay GHC 100,000.
This followed investigations, hearings, and determinations made in accordance with Act 989.
“These administrative penalties were imposed pursuant to the Commission’s enforcement powers under Section 71(2)(f) of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), which authorises the Commission to impose administrative penalties where a public institution or relevant private body fails to comply with an obligation under the Act,” it said in a statement.
The Commission emphasised that compliance with Act 989 is not discretionary. Failure to adhere to statutory timelines, disclosure duties, or enforcement directives constitutes a violation of law and attracts regulatory consequences.
It therefore directed all public institutions to take immediate steps to strengthen internal RTI compliance mechanisms, noting that continued non-compliance will attract further enforcement action.
