The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a firm directive to senior high school heads across the country, demanding the immediate return of all funds collected from students or parents for this year’s WASSCE practical examinations.
Despite the government’s full financial support to cover the cost of the 2025 WASSCE practicals—including materials and all related logistics—some schools have allegedly imposed unauthorized charges on candidates. This has triggered swift action from the GES to address what it considers an unacceptable development.
In a letter dated July 28, 2025, the GES instructed all school heads who took money for the exams to refund every cedi. The directive emphasizes that receipts must be issued to confirm each refund, and a report must be sent to Regional Directors once the process is finalized.
The Acting Deputy Director-General, Prof. Smile Dzisi, signed the communication and underscored the importance of eliminating unnecessary financial pressure on families during this exam period. The goal, the GES stressed, is to ensure that no student is excluded from participating in the practicals due to financial demands.
To enforce this mandate, the GES is relying on Regional Directors to pass the message down through District and Municipal Directors. School heads who refuse to comply have been warned that they risk facing serious disciplinary consequences.
This directive reaffirms the government’s commitment to easing educational costs for families and ensuring fairness in the conduct of national exams.
