GFA Licensing Chair Reacts to $2M Budget Cut Announcement For Black Stars

GFA Licensing Chair Reacts to $2M Budget Cut Announcement
  • GFA Club Licensing Chairman Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh has criticised the timing of Sports Minister Kofi Adam’s press conference revealing budget cuts for the Black Stars’ upcoming matches against Chad and Mali.
  • The minister announced that the initial $2 million request had been reduced to $1.3 million, with the Chad trip trimmed from $1.24 million to $841,290.
  • Dr Baah-Nuakoh argued that the disclosure could shift public focus away from the match itself, especially if Ghana loses. The Black Stars face Chad on September 4 in Ndjamena.

A senior Ghana Football Association official has raised concerns over the timing of the Sports Ministry’s public disclosure of the Black Stars’ budget just days before their World Cup qualifier against Chad.

Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh, Chairman of the GFA’s Club Licensing Committee, believes the announcement could distract from the team’s preparations and shift public attention away from the match itself. Speaking on Sporty FM, he questioned why the budget was made public now, suggesting it could have been released at a less sensitive time.

On Tuesday, September 2, Sports Minister Kofi Adam revealed that the GFA’s initial $2 million request for the September double-header had been reviewed and reduced to $1.3 million. The cost of the away fixture in Ndjamena was also slashed from $1.24 million to $841,290.

Dr Baah-Nuakoh argued that if Ghana loses the match, public discourse could be dominated by budget controversies rather than performance analysis. His comments come amid growing scrutiny over sports financing and the government’s push for transparency.

The Black Stars are set to face Chad on Thursday, September 4, at the Stade Olympique Marechal Idriss Deby Itno. The match marks a crucial step in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, with build-up coverage scheduled to begin at 12pm on GhanaWeb.
