The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has emphasised the government’s commitment to inclusive and equitable water management, highlighting the critical role of women in shaping effective water policies.
Speaking during this year’s World Water Day commemoration, Mr Adjei said sustainable water governance must reflect the contributions of all stakeholders, particularly women, who play multiple roles in water usage and management.
“The Government of Ghana recognises that sustainable water management must be inclusive and equitable,” he stated. “Women are not only users of water; they are also managers, protectors, and decision-makers in households and communities. Their voices, experiences, and leadership are therefore essential in shaping effective water policies and services.”
Mr Adjei noted that the government continues to implement programmes aimed at expanding access to safe drinking water, strengthening sanitation systems, and promoting integrated water resource management.
He highlighted the collaborative efforts of key institutions, including the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Ghana Water Limited, and the Water Resources Commission, in improving service delivery across the country.
“Through the efforts of these agencies and other stakeholders, we have made significant progress in improving water service delivery,” he said.
The minister added that priority has been placed on rural water supply, small-town water systems, and the rehabilitation of urban infrastructure to ensure that “no community is left behind.”
However, Mr Adjei cautioned that significant challenges persist, including rapid urbanisation, population growth, climate variability, pollution, and unsustainable land-use practices, which continue to strain water resources.
“These challenges require not only government action but collective responsibility,” he said, calling on traditional authorities, civil society organisations, development partners, the private sector, and communities to play active roles in protecting water resources and ensuring equitable access.
