Ghana Card can replace lost passport for Ghanaians abroad - Bawumia
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia revealed today that Ghanaians can use their Ghana Card to return home if their passport is lost or stolen while abroad.
Addressing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, Bawumia confirmed that the Ghana Card is recognized as a valid e-passport at 44,000 airports worldwide, enabling holders to board flights back to Ghana without hassle.
While emphasizing that the Ghana Card cannot be used for international travel, Bawumia assured that it can facilitate a smooth return to Ghana in emergency situations. This announcement aims to alleviate concerns for Ghanaians traveling overseas.
The Ghana Card is the national ID card issued to Ghanian citizens. It is proof of identity, citizenship and residence. It is issued by the National Identification Authority of Ghana. The current version is biometric and in ID1 format. The card is valid for 10 years and is compulsory for all citizens over 16.
Bawumia’s engagement with the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs is part of his campaign tour in the region.
The meeting was attended by prominent chiefs and queens, including Asante Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II and Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II, Domeabrahene Nana Kusi Oboadum I, Offinsohene Nana Dwamena Akenten II, Tepahene Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem I, Eijisuhemaa Nana Yaa Asantewaa II and Bompatamanhene Nana Effah Appenteng.
Senior government officials, such as Chief of Staff Akosuah Fremah Osei Opare and Minister for Energy Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, MP for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, the Chairman of the NPP, Stephen Ntim and the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong also accompanied the Vice President.
Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, 2024 flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has began a 3-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region today, Monday, June 10, 2024.
Some rumours have suggested that the Vice President may announce his running mate from the Ashanti Region while on this tour.
