Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa has urged members of the Ghanaian community to remain cautious and vigilant, even though demonstrations held on 28 and 29 April have now concluded.
In a public advisory issued on Wednesday, the High Commission warned that the end of organised protests did not rule out isolated tensions, sporadic disruptions, or unplanned gatherings in some locations.
“While the organised protests may have ended, there remains the possibility of isolated tensions… in certain locations,” the statement said.
Community members were advised to exercise prudence in their daily movements and activities over the coming days.
The High Commission outlined a series of precautionary measures, including avoiding unnecessary travel to areas previously affected by the demonstrations, particularly the central business districts of major towns and cities.
Ghanaians were also urged to remain alert in public places, transport hubs, shopping centres, and other crowded locations, and to be mindful of their surroundings at all times.
The advisory further recommended that community members keep identification documents, residence permits, and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.
It directed Ghanaians to report any threats, harassment, intimidation, or suspicious activity to the Commission and the nearest police station without delay.
Other measures include maintaining a low profile in public and online, avoiding confrontations or discussions that may escalate tensions, and refraining from sharing content that may be perceived as provocative, inflammatory, or misleading.
The High Commission encouraged Ghanaians to keep in regular contact with family, friends, and community networks, especially when travelling.
Where possible, it said, travel routes should be reviewed in advance and unnecessary movement after dark avoided.
The Mission urged community members to remain calm, act responsibly, and prioritise personal safety and wellbeing.
“Please continue to look out for one another, support vulnerable members of the community, and share only verified information from credible sources,” the statement added.
The High Commission said it will continue to monitor developments closely and provide further updates where necessary.
