Ghana and Pakistan have added a new layer of strength to their diplomatic relationship with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to resume regular high-level political engagements after years of limited interactions.

The agreements, signed in Accra, are expected to deepen political, diplomatic and institutional cooperation, while creating a framework for ongoing consultations across several sectors.

The Chief Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khadija Iddrisu, performed the signing on behalf of Ghana, while Pakistan’s Additional Foreign Secretary, Hamid Asghar Khan, initialled for his country.

The signing ceremony was followed by the first-ever round of political consultations between the two sides.

Describing the development as historic, Khan said it marked “a significant milestone” following the reopening of Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Ghana in 2022 after nearly 20 years.

‘We have allocated a plot of land in our diplomatic enclave for Ghana to construct a new mission and chancery,” he said, adding that the gesture demonstrated Pakistan’s “strong commitment to strengthening our bilateral ties.”

Reflecting on the depth of relations between both countries, Khan recalled that Pakistan opened its first resident African mission in Accra in 1965, shortly after Ghana’s independence.

“Our first High Commissioner to Ghana, Dilshad Makar, later became one of Pakistan’s most distinguished diplomats, and it is a great honour that a hall at Ghana’s Foreign Ministry bears his name,” he noted.

Khadija Iddrisu said the signing of the MoUs had injected new energy into the relationship, describing the consultations as “an important step towards sustained and meaningful engagement.”

She added that “Ghana is keen to expand cooperation beyond traditional diplomacy to areas such as defence, digital innovation, education, agriculture, public health, environmental protection, peace and security, and people-to-people exchanges.”

She also added that at a time of growing global fragmentation and protectionism, stronger partnerships between developing countries were more important than ever.

“These agreements give us the opportunity to translate our long-standing relationship, dating back to 1958, into tangible benefits for our people,” she said.
