The Ghana Prisons Service has launched Prisons Service’ Medicine and Equipment Bank Initiative aimed at improving healthcare delivery within correctional facilities nationwide.

The initiative was unveiled on March 26, 2026, at the Assemblies of God Church, Ringway, in Accra, under the theme: “Prison Health is Public Health: Strategic Mobilisation of Drugs and Medical Supplies for Prisoners Across the Country.”

The programme seeks to ensure a steady supply of essential medicines and medical equipment for inmates as part of the Think Prisons 360° initiative, while strengthening the management of both acute and chronic conditions in prisons.

In her welcome address, the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), described the initiative as a reflection of a collective commitment to safeguarding the health of both inmates and officers.

She noted that the platform would serve as a coordinated system for mobilising and distributing medical supplies across prison facilities.

She further emphasised that the initiative goes beyond healthcare, stating that access to quality medical care is fundamentally a human rights issue.

Delivering solidarity messages, the Chairman of the Pharmacy Council of Ghana, Hon. Joseph Yieleh Chireh, urged stakeholders to support the initiative through timely donations of quality medicines. The Chairman of the Prisons Service Council, Apostle Alexander Kumi-Larbi, also commended the Director-General for prioritising inmate welfare.

The Managing Director of SIC Life Insurance, Mr. Solomon Twum Barima, and the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, pledged their support and encouraged other organisations to contribute.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, who shared her experience working with the Service, officially launched the initiative.

The event was attended by members of the Prisons Directorate, as well as representatives from UNODC, the US Embassy, SIC Life Insurance, GLICO Life Company Limited, and DCL Laboratories.
