The Government of Ghana has announced plans to generate approximately $100 million through tourism-linked reparations to restore historic forts and castles across the country.
The initiative focuses on preserving heritage sites associated with the transatlantic slave trade, many of which have suffered years of structural deterioration. Authorities say the restoration effort will improve conservation standards while enhancing visitor experience.
The project forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to leverage history, culture, and heritage as drivers of sustainable economic growth. Officials believe the initiative will attract increased tourism from the African diaspora and international visitors.
Funds raised will be directed toward rehabilitation works, improved infrastructure, digital storytelling, and educational programming at the historic sites.
Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that heritage preservation not only safeguards history but also creates jobs and stimulates local economies.
As Ghana positions itself as a leading destination for cultural tourism in Africa, the restoration project is expected to play a key role in strengthening the country’s global cultural footprint.
