Renowned journalist and political analyst, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has called on President John Mahama’s administration to adopt a more assertive approach in dealing with the recent 10% tariffs imposed on Ghanaian exports by the United States.
Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, Pratt suggested that the current leadership draw inspiration from the firm pan-African ideology of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He believes such a stance would be more fitting in addressing what many see as an unjust trade practice.
According to Pratt, Ghana must take a principled stand rather than bow to international pressure, especially in matters that impact its economic sovereignty.
He pointed to the legacy of Nkrumah, whose vision for African independence and resistance to foreign dominance shaped Ghana’s early path in global diplomacy.
The trade tariffs, which have been described as a major blow to Ghanaian exporters, have stirred frustration among businesses, many of whom claim the new fees are undercutting their competitiveness in the U.S. market.
Calls have grown louder for the Mahama-led government to either push back diplomatically or seek better terms through negotiations.
Pratt’s comments have sparked widespread debate online, with a growing number of Ghanaians echoing his call for the country to assert itself more confidently in the international trade arena.
