The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has inaugurated an 11-member Governing Board of the Ghana Sports Fund at the Ministry’s Conference Room on Friday, January 23, 2026, describing the moment as a major turning point in the financing of sports development in Ghana.
Speaking at the ceremony, Kofi Adams described the inauguration as “a historic moment for Ghana sports,” stressing that the creation of the Sports Fund answers a long-standing call from the sports fraternity for a reliable and transparent funding system. According to him, the Fund represents “a structured, predictable, and accountable financing framework that serves the entire sports ecosystem.”
The Minister explained that the establishment of the Fund was the result of years of advocacy and policy engagement, backed by strong political commitment. He credited President John Dramani Mahama for ensuring that sports is treated as a critical part of national development, noting that “this administration keeps faith with its promises.” He added that the Fund was legally established through Act 1159 following Cabinet approval, parliamentary passage, and presidential assent.
Kofi Adams highlighted that the Fund is designed to correct years of uncertainty and imbalance in sports financing, where federations and athletes often struggled with inconsistent support. “Too much talent has been lost, not because of lack of ability, but because of lack of support,” he said, explaining that the Fund will support athlete development, grassroots sports, infrastructure, capacity building, and high-performance preparation. He charged the Governing Board to uphold integrity, independence, and transparency in the management of the Fund, stressing that “this Fund must serve sport, not interests; reward performance, not proximity.” The Minister further urged federations and administrators to embrace structured planning and accountability, noting that if well managed, the Fund will strengthen Ghana’s presence on the continental and global sports stage.
Board Chairperson, Prof. Koryoe Anim-Wright, expressed gratitude to the Minister for the confidence reposed in the Board, acknowledging the diversity of expertise represented. She noted that despite their varied backgrounds, members share “a singularity of purpose” and a common commitment to delivering on the Fund’s mandate.
She assured stakeholders that the Board fully understands the responsibility ahead and is committed to building a sustainable and accountable sports financing system. Prof. Anim-Wright emphasized the importance of equity, transparency, and structured planning, pledging that the Board will work closely with stakeholders to consolidate sports funding for greater national impact and to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people.
