JoyNews reported on Thursday, January 29, 2026, that Ghanaian cocoa farmers have expressed worries over unpaid wages, saying they haven’t been paid for their produce since November 2025. The farmers claim that their livelihoods and capacity to maintain their farms are being negatively impacted by the delay.

Several farmer organizations claim that despite several requests to the appropriate authorities, the problem has continued for months. They contend that families whose only source of income is cocoa cultivation have experienced financial hardship as a result of the payment delay. One of Ghana’s primary exports and an essential component of the national economy is cocoa. Purchasing cocoa beans from farmers and making sure payments are made on schedule are the responsibilities of the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC).Farmers, however, claim that there hasn’t been much communication from the corporation, so they don’t know when payments will be made.

“We have worked hard to produce cocoa of high quality, but we have not been paid for months,” said Kwame Mensah, a local farmer leader. For us and our families, this is a really challenging position. He called on the CMC and the government to take immediate action. Due to the recent fluctuations in global cocoa prices, small-scale farmers are even more dependent on prompt payment. Analysts caution that protracted delays may have an impact on Ghana’s export earnings and cocoa production in the upcoming seasons.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has acknowledged the concerns and stated that they are working with the Cocoa Marketing Company to find a prompt solution. In the upcoming days, a formal announcement from the ministry is anticipated. producers and stakeholders are demanding for better processes to ensure that cocoa producers get paid promptly and fairly. The situation illustrates the persistent issues faced by cocoa producers in Ghana, who play a significant role in both the national economy and the worldwide cocoa market.
