The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has urged Ghanaian shop owners in the city to close their businesses today as a precautionary measure ahead of a planned demonstration against immigrants.
The warning comes as the March Organisation prepares to stage a protest march to the Presidency today, Monday, April 28, 2026, to present grievances on immigration matters.
In a statement issued to the Ghanaian community, the High Commission advised members to avoid all protest zones and remain vigilant throughout the day.
“Particularly in Pretoria today, 28th April 2026, where the March Organisation is planning demonstrations to the Presidency to present its grievances on immigration matters, all members of our community are advised to take precautionary measures,” the statement said.
Safety Precautions
The High Commission specifically urged Ghanaian shop owners to shut down for the day and steer clear of areas where protests are taking place.
“Shop owners are strongly encouraged to close their businesses for the day and avoid areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place,” it added.
The Mission also cautioned Ghanaians against joining public gatherings that could turn confrontational and advised them to maintain a low profile.
Community members were further urged to exercise discretion both in public and on social media.
“Act with discretion in both public spaces and online platforms, including avoiding the sharing of content that may be perceived as provocative or inflammatory,” the statement noted.
Ghanaians in distress have been asked to contact the Mission’s emergency line for assistance.
South Africa has seen recurring tensions over immigration, with some local groups blaming foreign nationals for unemployment and crime.
