Evelyn and Stephanie Mawuli, Ghanaian siblings born in Japan, are making waves in the basketball world as they represent Japan in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The sisters, who are three years apart in age, have already made their mark in Japan’s opening game against the USA, despite a 102-76 defeat. Evelyn, the older sibling, has been a stalwart for Japan, playing through the ranks from U-16 to the senior team and accumulating four FIBA medals.
Stephanie, on the other hand, has also had an impressive career, with eight medals to her name, including those from her junior years. She made her professional debut in 2017 and has played for Japan in various competitions, including 3×3 basketball.
What’s remarkable about the Mawuli sisters is their journey to representing Japan. Born to Ghanaian immigrants who became Japanese citizens in 2009, they were naturalized to play for Japan. Their story highlights the power of diversity and inclusion in sports.
As they continue to shine in the Olympic Games, the Mawuli sisters are an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, anything is possible, regardless of one’s background.
