A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Awal Mohammed, has said Ghanaians are worse off now than they were in 2024.
His comments come amid remarks by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, who stated that Ghana’s economy is stabilising faster than expected, with key indicators showing notable improvement across several sectors.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on 17 March while discussing the state of the economy, Mr Mohammed criticised the government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for celebrating statistics that, in his view, do not reflect the reality on the ground.
“The NDC and the government can celebrate all these statistics. But the reality on the ground does not support them. The Ghanaian is worse off today than in 2024,” he said.
Mr Mohammed noted that while officials often highlight inflation, exchange rates, and other such figures, they tend to omit important statistics related to construction, capital expenditure, and the services sector.
He pointed out that construction dipped by 4% in 2025, and industry growth declined from 11.1% in 2024 to just 0.8% as of September last year, citing the 2026 budget as his source.
“The amount of money that was released for capital expenditure that would drive growth was only 34%, according to Ato Forson. So yes, they will celebrate the statistics that favour them. But others that don’t favour them, that would even drive the growth of the economy, we don’t see it,” he added.
