The National Identification Authority (NIA) has officially rolled out same-day issuance of Ghana Cards across all 292 registration centres nationwide.
According to the authority, the two-year backlog of unissued cards has also been cleared, ending the long delays that frustrated many Ghanaians.
Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, Head of Corporate Affairs, explained that supply chain challenges between March 2023 and January 2025 caused severe shortages of blank cards. With those issues now resolved, applicants can register and receive their Ghana Cards the same day.
So far, the NIA database has captured 18,950,942 Ghanaians. Out of this number, 18,848,635 cards have been printed and 17,747,459 issued, leaving less than one million awaiting collection.
The NIA has also cautioned institutions and individuals against requesting or using photocopies of Ghana Cards for verification. Officials stressed that only biometric authentication through fingerprints and digital systems is lawful and secure, warning that photocopies expose people to identity theft.
