Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a senior government official, has sparked controversy following a drastic change in his stance on the fight against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In 2024, while in opposition, he claimed that addressing galamsey was an easy task, arguing that Ghana’s military and police forces were strong enough to end the illegal mining activities if the government was committed. However, after his party assumed power, Kwakye Ofosu has made a significant shift in his position.
Recently, he stated that the battle against galamsey cannot be a one-time effort but rather a continuous, lifelong fight.
He pointed out that illegal mining would always be a temptation for some, and efforts to combat it must be ongoing. He emphasized that it’s unrealistic to expect the fight to be resolved quickly, acknowledging that people will always try to engage in illegal mining.
