Ghana will soon elect a female president, according to President John Dramani Mahama, who has voiced confidence in the outcome, calling it a logical step in the nation’s growing commitment to gender equality. Speaking during the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President Mahama stated that the possibility is becoming more plausible due to Ghana’s progress in advancing women in leadership roles.

“I have no doubt that a woman will hold Ghana’s top presidential position sooner rather than later,” he said. In his remarks, the president urged African countries to prioritize gender equality in economic development and governance. “Africa’s growth is not relegated to gender equality.Africa cannot reach its full potential if women are left behind, he added, adding that it is essential to our social resilience, economic change, and sustainable growth.

Additionally, he urged member states to give gender-responsive budgeting top priority and advocated for the stronger implementation of continental frameworks, such as the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.President Mahama emphasized that “tomorrow’s budgets, laws, and protections for women and girls” will be the true test of devotion, not rhetoric.
