Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for restoring the honour and prestige of the presidency, saying Ghana has reclaimed its rightful place in the community of nations.
Speaking at an engagement with Ghanaians living in Zambia, Mr Ablakwa declared: “We all must be proud. President Mahama has restored the honour, the prestige, to the high office of the presidency, and Ghana has taken its rightful place in the community of nations.”
He highlighted Ghana’s growing influence on the African continent, referencing the recent ECOWAS Summit where foreign ministers unanimously supported West Africa’s bid to host the African Union (AU) chairmanship.
“Ghana is ready, with our President, who we contend is best for the job. All foreign ministers unanimously agreed — not one opposed it, and none feared repercussions upon returning to their countries,” he said.
Following the resolution by the AU Ministerial Council and endorsement by heads of state, Mr Ablakwa confirmed that President Mahama is now “the AU Chairperson in waiting,” urging all Ghanaians to support him as he prepares to take on this continental leadership role.
The Foreign Minister also highlighted the President’s dedication to the welfare of Ghanaians abroad. He cited a recent intervention in Latvia, following the tragic assassination of a Ghanaian student studying at Reģan Technical University.
Mr Ablakwa explained that President Mahama had granted him special permission to travel to Latvia, foregoing an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, to ensure justice for the student.
“Many incidents have happened to Africans abroad, but this is the first time an African President has sent his Foreign Minister personally to pursue justice — a matter that could have been left solely to the family’s lawyers. It shows how much he values the lives of Ghanaians worldwide,” he said.
He added: “He looks out for Ghanaians everywhere. He will not sit unconcerned while our citizens are malhandled, discriminated against, or suffer injustice. Immediately, he calls us and demands action to protect your interests.”
Mr Ablakwa stressed that under President Mahama, Ghana’s foreign policy prioritises consular affairs, ensuring that the protection and welfare of Ghanaians abroad remains central to national diplomatic efforts.
