President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana’s progress will depend on every citizen performing their responsibilities with excellence and commitment to national development.

‎Speaking at the 69th Independence Day Anniversary celebration at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday March 6, 2026, the President called on Ghanaians to contribute positively to the country’s growth regardless of their profession or social status.

‎According to him, the theme for this year’s celebration, “Building Prosperity, Inspiring Hope,” represents a promise between the government and the people that every policy and decision must help improve the lives of citizens.

President Mahama said independence brought freedom to Ghana but also comes with responsibility for citizens to protect the nation’s resources and work together for progress.

‎He noted that Ghana’s democracy has endured because citizens have learned to compete without destroying each other, disagree without hatred and transfer power peacefully.

‎‎The President paid tribute to Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, and other past leaders whose contributions helped build the nation over the years.

‎He also highlighted efforts by his administration to stabilize the economy, restore investor confidence and strengthen fiscal discipline.

‎According to him, inflation is gradually declining, the cedi is stabilising and confidence in the Ghanaian economy is returning as government continues to renegotiate debts and redirect resources into key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture and job creation.

‎President Mahama stressed that corruption remains a major threat to national development, describing it as a cancer that weakens the foundation of the country.

‎He said his government is strengthening institutions and protecting anti-corruption agencies from political interference to ensure that no individual is above the law.

The President also encouraged young people to take advantage of opportunities created through technology, education reforms, and entrepreneurship programmes being rolled out across the country.

‎He said government is expanding digital infrastructure, innovation hubs, internships and apprenticeship programmes to prepare the youth for the modern economy.

‎President Mahama further announced that the government is in the final stages of establishing a Women’s Development Bank to support women entrepreneurs with financing, mentorship and business support.

‎He said empowering women is essential for national development because when women succeed, families and communities also prosper.

‎On the continental level, the President said Ghana will continue to play a leading role in Africa’s economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area headquartered in Accra.

‎As Ghana approaches its 70th independence anniversary next year, President Mahama urged citizens to work together towards building a country where education and healthcare are accessible, opportunities are based on merit and economic prosperity is shared by all.

‎He emphasised that national development cannot depend solely on leadership but requires the collective effort of every Ghanaian.

‎President Mahama therefore called on citizens across the country to play their roles diligently.

‎“Wherever you are, whatever you do, do your part with excellence. Do it for Ghana, do it for Africa and for generations yet unborn,” he said.
