A senior officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has made sweeping claims about the level of support the party receives from the seat of government. Speaking to party supporters, he asserted that each constituency under the NDC benefits from a monthly allocation of GHS20,000 allegedly provided by the presidency to sustain day-to-day political operations nationwide.
He argued that the current administration has introduced a style of governance that stands out in Ghana’s political record. In his view, the structure of appointments across state institutions reflects a broad representation of individuals from various backgrounds, not confined to traditional party loyalists. He suggested that appointments have even included those who might be considered outsiders within the NDC’s ranks.
Mr. Gbande indicated that party representation in government positions has reached exceptional levels. He claimed that spouses of officials, as well as the officials themselves, have secured roles in government—ranging from regional leadership positions to roles within state bodies. Some regional secretaries and selected chairpersons, according to him, have taken on responsibilities previously occupied only by ministers.
He went further to state that this pattern is not isolated. Across different regions and constituencies, he described a situation where between eight and nine regional executives, and as many as ten constituency executives, are holding positions within government structures.
