GIS hands over officer to police over alleged large transportation of ammunition consignment

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has handed over Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Ahmed Abdul Samad to the Ghana Police to assist in investigations into his alleged role in the transportation of a large consignment of ammunition.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (Public Affairs), Maud Anima Quainoo, said the officer was released following a formal request from the police.

The consignment, reportedly intercepted in the Ashanti Region, included more than 2,000 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition and bulletproof vests.

The GIS said the officer was released by its Upper East Regional Command to ensure full cooperation with law enforcement in uncovering the facts of the case.

“We are cooperating fully with investigators to ensure the matter is thoroughly examined,” the statement said.

The service emphasised that it would not shield any officer whose conduct threatens public safety or undermines the professionalism of the Ghana Immigration Service.

The GIS further reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, national security, and the rule of law, assuring the public that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any officer found culpable.
