John Dramani Mahama’s address has sparked reactions from Afenyo-Markin
In Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026, the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address by giving a nod to some recent economic progresses, especially from the Gold-for-Reserve policy.
But he didn’t hold back on who should get the real credit.

He pointed out that the policy, now being rolled out by the current administration, was actually the idea of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; the same person the opposition once heavily criticised.
“The president is telling us today that some gains have been made… through this Gold-For-Reserve policy,” Afenyo-Markin noted.
He then pivoted to what he saw as a critical omission in the narrative surrounding the policy’s origins.
“Mr Speaker, the Gold-For-Reserve policy; what they have failed to tell Ghanaians is that the Bawumia that they attacked is the brainchild of this policy,” he stated.
Using a familiar Ghanaian proverb to make his point clear and relatable, the Minority Leader called on the government to be fair and acknowledge good ideas no matter who comes up with them.
“Mr Speaker, I would want to urge the government to give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia,” he stated.
