The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has raised the alarm over mounting intimidation and threats targeting media personnel reporting on the protracted Bawku conflict, cautioning that such actions jeopardise press freedom, public safety, and national security.

At a media briefing, GJA President Albert Dwumfuor said the Association is particularly concerned about reports of death threats and online harassment directed at the Upper East Regional Chairman of the GJA, Albert Sore, in relation to his coverage of the crisis.

“These threats are unlawful and pose serious risks not only to journalists but also to the wider peace and security of the nation,” Mr Dwumfuor stated.

He noted that reporters covering the Bawku situation have been labelled adversaries and targeted through social media, audio recordings, and other digital platforms, creating a climate of fear that could escalate into physical attacks.

The GJA President explained that the Association has received detailed accounts from Mr Sore, indicating that routine professional engagements were deliberately misrepresented to provoke hostility and issue direct threats against journalists.

He stressed that similar intimidation has occurred previously, forming a worrying pattern aimed at suppressing independent reporting.

While some engagement has been held with the Upper East Regional Police Command, the GJA said current security arrangements remain inadequate.

The Association is therefore calling for enhanced protection, prompt investigations, and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
