A routine delivery turned deadly on Saturday afternoon when two men lost their lives while unloading glass panels from a lorry at Hitchin Town Football Club’s overflow car park. A third man sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with Hertfordshire Police and the East of England Ambulance Service deploying multiple units, including critical care paramedics. Despite their efforts, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. BST on land adjacent to the club’s ground on Fishponds Road. The team, which competes in the Southern League Division One Central, did not have a home match scheduled that weekend.

The haulage company involved, Martello, confirmed it had delivered the container but stated it was not responsible for opening or offloading it. The identities of the deceased have not been released, and police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The club has expressed its condolences to the families affected, describing the event as a “tragic accident.” The community of Hitchin, known for its close-knit atmosphere and historic football roots, has been left shaken.
